Random investing thoughts

So I was watching Mad Money this afternoon, and it was one of Cramer’s “Guide to Investing” shows (it was from May 23rd..I’m a little behind). Regardless of your opinion of Cramer’s antics (if you’ve ever seen the show, he comes off as completely insane), he has quite a few good tips, especially for the new investor.

Anywho, the discussion was about how to sell stocks, and how to identify what’s justifiable selling due to problems with a company, or just market volatility (which in turn makes stocks cheaper to buy more of!). One of the topics in particular caught my attention. He mentioned that every Friday (after the markets close) he takes and rates all of the stocks he owns (well that his charitable trust owns…he’s not allowed to own stock per say due to the show) and all of the stocks he wants to own from 1-4.

1, Want to buy at the current price. Plan to buy already.
2, Want to buy more of if there’s a slight pullback in price (he goes for 5-7%).
3, These are stocks you own, and would sell if there’s a slight rally (5-7%) on price.
4, Would sell right now, at current price.

Now, these ratings are for today. If there’s a big sell-off, it might bump up the ratings on your stocks, as a 2 might become a 1 simply because its gotten so cheap. If there’s a big sell-off, it’s time to dump the 3’s and 4’s (hopefully at the start of the sell-off) to raise capital to buy 1’s and 2’s. The idea is, you’re going to sell off your 3’s and 4’s anyway, so circle the wagons and get rid of them before the drop too low (don’t wait forever for a bad stock to go up). Focus on stocks that you really like and circle the wagons around your 1’s and 2’s.

While I have a running watch list of stocks that I keep an eye on, I can honestly say I don’t do this now. Obviously, the key to these ratings is being honest with yourself. It’s human nature to up these ratings to avoid facing the harsh truth that maybe you bought a bad stock. I think I’m going to plan on doing this in the very near future, maybe even this weekend!

A little bit of me in her.

I want to play games on Surface

04/04/08 | by epthegeek | Categories: Features

Microsoft Surface. It’s a hot new item. Set to debut in the public realm on April 17th at AT&T Stores, where it’ll help sell products.

When MS first demonstrated the Surface system, they showed off many other commercial uses as well. I don’t have much interest in most of that. My interest in Surface is much more frivolous. I want to play games on it.

But not just any games; I want to play board games on it. Badly.
